Cutaway model of an UDZ-1 tilt fuze. This Yugoslav fuze is primarily used in booby traps.
The fuze consists of the following parts:
1 - fuze housing
2 - tilt rod housing
3 - firing cap with fuze adepter
4 - firing pin
5 - firing pin spring
6 - locking pin
7 - locking pin spring
8 - steel locking ball
9 - tilt rod
10 - flange
11 - safety clip
Functioning of the UDZ-1 fuze:
The UDZ-1 fuze is fastened to an object by means of two screws through two lugs on the sides of the fuze housing (1), the tilt rod (9) sticking out to the side the activation action is to be expected from.
The firing cap with the fuze adepter (3) is screwed into the base, the fuze cord pushed into the fuze adepter, the detonator at the other side of the fuze cord inserted into the explosive charge. After this, the safety clip (11) is removed, rendering the booby trap live.
The firing pin (4) is fixated by a steel locking ball (8), placed half in the firing pin (4), half in the fuze housing (1). The locking pin (6) enshures that the locking ball (8) cannot fall inward, thus releasing the firing pin.
The locking pin (6) is pushed upward by the locking pin spring (7), only to be blocked by the lower end of the tilt rod (9). The tilt rod has a flange that is rounded at the top side, enabeling it to easily rotate in the tilt rod housing (2).
If the tilt rod (9) is rotated into a random direction, the lower part of the tilt rod, moves into the opposite direction , releasing the locking pin (6), allowing it to be moved upward by it’s spring (7). This allows the locking ball (8) to fall into the firing pin, releasing the firing pin to move into the firing cap (3), igniting the fuze cord and the explosive charge.
The UDZ-1 fuze is found in the following countries:
Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo
