A friend has asked me if this item is in any way ordnance related.

Height = 240 mm

Diameter = 100 mm

No markings.

I am only working on the photographs.

It is a hot water botle made of a cartridge case, we find them a lot over here.

Surely it would be easier to just put the top bit on then and leave the base original, as it would have been flat anyway, then it would still have the shell markings and stamps on the bottom?

I guess the idea was to remove all markings and links to what it was and to just have a functional item. Logically by turning it upside down the primer hole becomes a filling hole. A great example of "swords into plowshares"

Cheers
