Unknow case shotgun or flare signal

Can anyone identify this casing that was dug up locally, looks like a large brass shot gun case or could be a flare signal case. I assume about 20mm in diameter the base seems to taper. Anyone know?

It's a flare cart, German. 26 x 81mm.

The symbol (3 Hexagon inside 1 large hexagon) is of the AEG company, WW1 vintage.

I have similar, its a heavy case for the size.

...and on bottom side I think it's an unclear AWS inspection stamp.
