I assume this is a flare cartridge, can anyone give me more info, manufacturer etc, thanks

That is an interesting case. Looks all brass with a thinner rim than the usual British flare cases so it may be a contract case (I doubt it is a 4ga shotshell case?).
The full brass case and not the usual head and case extension is odd. Also no MK on the headstamp to denote a flare mark.
James Pain & Sons Ltd in UK had many addresses and was founded in 1850? , taken over by Bryant and May in 1960 and now is Pains-Wessex.
I think all J.P & S cases were made by Kynoch or Eley and only filled by them. I would like this confirmed.
 
I had Joseph Parkes & Sons, Willenhall, Staffordshire, UK written down for J.P. & S. Can anybody verify which one is correct?
