Unknown 40 mm Bofors like thingy

Does anybody know what this is? It looks like it is related to 40 mm Bofors. The thingy measures 47,5x320R66.3 and it looks factory cut-down. Maybe a clearing or salute case? Drill? Based on who found it it is likely French.
