Unknown 55-57mm item

[Vasco Da Gama]

This item came in an auction lot and I have very little idea of what it is! It is well made and could be ordnance related, I have a feeling we have discussed something similar before, the search facility did not give me anything.
The item is 68mm long, diameter of 55/57mm, bottom section is steel, the top brass and hollow. The markings on the steel section are MLN with 44 underneath.
Could be anything from a drill projectile to a gas burner!
