Stopped in my favorite surplus store, he had ( ownership transferred to me for $125) an 81MM Illum mortar. Unknown to me or my internet search. Body Black painted " Illum, shell NR 164A1, 81MM-M, Lot SAP-1-1".
Markings on body at fin, " MMJ-1-3-82 81MM NR 164A1".
It has the powder bags clipped on at the fins. The fuze markings " SG-81-1 Fuze MISQ NR ( ?) 48"

Hi, all the items ive seen with the NR marking in the past have been Dutch? Seems a long way from home if it is!! Tig

It looks like a copy of a post WWII U.S. design with a WWII style fin.

With this being a British based website, if it is a European design, someone would surely know?

Hi,

i'm not sure if it helps, but I bought this, similar 81mm Illuminating Mortar Bomb, in the UK a few years ago..

The fuze is a DM93A1.

I think you'll find the NR code, going by a 50 cal ammo box I have, is Belgian...ie 50 cal ball = NR441 50 cal tracer =NR442. If there is a NATO code marked on it beginning with 1305- confirms it

I'm thinking Belgian...

The MMJ code (manufacturer of the metal body) stands for "Metalurgie S.A., Mechelen, Belgium".

The SAP code is (yet) unknown to me, but it is found on a 20x102 API round together with the FNB code, so most likely Belgian. (see pics)
SAP should be the manufacturer of the pyrotechnical composition.

For SAP I have two possibilities :
- La Soudure Autogene, Pont-Sainte-Maxence (OISE) France
- Skonska Attikfabriken AB, Sweden

So I would guess, by the LOT CODES ...

Body was made in Belgium. Then sold and used either by Sweden (SAP) or France (SAP). My best guess would be Swiss. Unless someone knows of a manufacturer in Belgium that uses the SAP LOT CODE?
