Unknown ammo can

I have some that are similar but not quite the same. I take it that the handle is a thick webbing strap with metal on both ends to stop the strap pulling through the fixed retainers on the lid? Later / other versions may be fitted with a folding metal carrying handle instead. I would suspect that the origin is Eastern Europe but I may be wrong. I found mine in captured Iraqi AFVs following the 1991 Gulf War. If my memory is correct mine contained 14.5 mm HMG (for DSKh?) linked ammo. Mine have no official markings / stencilling and probably were bought by the Iraqis from the former Warsaw Pact countries .... or Pakistan, China or anyone else who would sell Sadman what he wanted. That includes Britain, France, Brazil etc etc. I have a similar container but taller and thinner that was for a smaller calibre, maybe 8 mm, linked MG ammo, from the same conflict. They are all doing sterling work as tool boxes. If you measure the internal width of your box then compare it with the lengths of various SAA rounds it may help point you in the right direction for what it originally contained. The ammo that I pulled out of mine had no packing fitments in the containers but that does not mean that there were none originally. Unfortunately I never saw such containers in pristine unused condition. The closures on mine all involve some form of spring loaded bar that engage with holes or raised fixtures on the body of the box.

The can is for the czech VZ-59 or UK-59. The links you have in an other post belong in this can.
