Hello All,
Last one for the moment. Picked up this inert British possible 4in shell recently. It has been fired but the driving band has split axially but still hanging on in there, with part of the fuze fitted to the nose. The shell has been chrome plated at some stage but surface rust is starting to break through the surface & the letters 'F' & 'S' (Forged Steel?) vaguely appear on the base in the 9 & 3 o'clock positions; no other markings appear anywhere else. Dimensions as follows:
Overall length: 323mm.
Overall diameter: 100mm.
Driving band width: 31.3mm.
Diameter of fuze base at it's widest: 56.6mm
Diameter of fuze base at the tip: 48mm.
Diameter of tapered threaded hole at tip: 29mm.
Thread depth: 40mm.
Distance from aft of driving band to base: 10mm.
16 groove rifling, RH twist, with two grooves in the driving band, 1st is 16.7mm from the fwd edge of the band & the 2nd is 27mm from the fwd edge. There is no crimping groove so I'm assuming that it is a separately loaded round & would be keen to know what the correct case would be for it too. Many thanks for your help. Regards, Ian.
