Unknown Cartridge

Picked this Cartridge up recently.
Projectile measures approx. 30mm x 96mm
Cartridge case is approx 44mm x 173mm
I cannot confirm if the projectile even belongs to the Cartridge Case. I cannot remove it by hand.
It looks to be one solid piece of metal.

If anyone has any leads as to what it is, and what weapons system it was fired from I would appreciate it.
Thanks,

Jon

I'm suspicious about the projectile.
Its not GAU 8 otherwise it would have a plastic driving band (although the case is).
Are there any markings on the projectile?
Considering hos tightly it fits into the case the driving band doesn't appear to protrude much beyond the external diameter of the case. Possibly home made?

Dave,
This was taken from someones home after they deceased. They had about 170 different items in the home.
After bringing them back, we determined a lot of them had been repainted. We are also starting to discover that some of them seem to be home made.

This item in particular was tough. The Projectile has no markings (neither does the cartridge case).
It has no fuze, and does not have the proper shape for an AP Projectile. the "driving band" on this item is made from the same metal as the projectile itself and not copper as are most driving bands. The Projectile is so tight it is nearly impossible to take off without damaging the cartridge case.
So, I would tend to agree it is probably home made. Its just the fact it is on the cartridge case so tightly I am curious how it was put on in the first place...
Want to rule out all options before I make a call on this one.

If you put a projectile into the case mouth then drop the whole lot from a few inches onto the floor the projectile soon rams into the case very tightly. Possibly if it was done a while back some rust may have formed between the case and projectile making it even more immovable. The fact its in a GAU 8 case with a steel driving band to the projectile sets off the alarm bells. Don't rush to rule out all options though, I collect experimental cannon rounds and have had many over the years which I was worried about which turned out to be real after a little research. I'm sure there are others on the forum who are much better qualified than me to comment on this particular round.
Would love to see some of the other 170 items, they sound interesting.
Dave.
