Hi All,
Recently acquired a 3" 20 Cwt shell, nicely stamped with calibre, NT (for Night Tracer), and F.S. (for Forged Steel) but with no manufacturer's mark. It does, however, have this mark 3 over E12 stamped on both the shell body and the gunmetal fuze adapter. Can anyone tell me the meaning of this mark, please? Also stamped heavily on the body is F. H. SWEETNAM INSPECTOR.
The date stamp on the shell is 26.8.1916. I am thinking this was perhaps a presentation item to Mr. Sweetnam, possibly on retirement or other special occasion, but a search on the internet for this gentleman has come up blank. Anyone out there know anything about him?
Roger.
