I recently got this fascinating item with some other militaria related stuff . It measures 7" x 3" & is made of bronze & iron & weighs 3Lbs . It looks like a projectile that has swelled on landing but it's not as this is definitely how it was made . There are no markings on it . It had an old label on it describing it as a "Fuse grenade mortar" & make of that what you like ! The extension on the top is internally threaded , possibly for an impact fuse & the top part is attached to the main body by steel shear pins just like a shrapnel round . Any help much appreciated . I would suggest that it was a low-order that failed to function correctly and bulged the body. It is rare to see them like this, but not unheard of. I saw an 8-inch spotter round one time that was so uniformly bulged that you would swear that it was factory done. The stamped nomenclature in that case made it clear, so there could be no other explanation. In your second photo look at the engraving marks on the rotating band. Looking at the band, as you go from the base to the mid-portion of the projectile, the width of the grooves gets larger, as though stretched.
