Unknown projectile

Good evening,

An ID request popped on a facebook group (Grenades and Ordnance of the 20th Century) :

XX_PRO_UNK.jpgXX_PRO_UNK1.jpg

Was found in south Lebanon.
Diam is 81/82mm, height is approx 160 mm without fuze.
The fuze seems to be a french V18 IR normally found on mortar shells
The projectile has an odd shape for a mortar shell
I found no docs on this.
I'm thinking some kind of rocket warhead...

Any ideas ?

Regards,

S.

My first idea is that you are face to a mortar projectile wich explode in low order, expelling his tail.
Explosive did not detonate but only burn into the shell. This burning has cause pressure in the shell and cause the swelling of it.
Reasons of it are numerous : bad HE, bad initiating due to bad fuze,...... Yes, I know, it's bad !

Yoda,

I'm not an expert, so I wont rule out your explanation.

However, two things in my opinion, contradict this :
1. If it's a swelling, it's damn regular.
2. The projectile has no gas check bands.

S.

Are you able to write down the markings?

I ask because the British No 138 fuze [DD(L)360 and DD(L)7070] is very similar to the fuze on the projectile.

Norman,

As I said in the beginning of the thread, it's a Facebook request. I didn't see the projectile with my own eyes, but only the two pictures shown above. I asked the guy if threre were any stampings on it, but he didn't answer. Guess they only took two pictures, and hopefully reported it's position.
I think the fuze is stamped V18 IR, but that's all I was able to guess.

S.

Hello,

Really looks like a head of Israeli 82mm rocket (HE pic1 or WP pic2 - maybe HE as I can see green paint).
These rockets were fuzed with french 24-31mm V18 IR (!)

MINENAZ16,

You've got it !

Do you have more doc about these rockets, and their correct names, by any chance ?
Can I use your pics to answer the FB request ?

The first rocket I show is known as Rocket 82mm HE Mk5, the second, Rocket 82mm WP (White phosphorus).
You can use pictures but my doc is for official use only so I can't post on forum.
Bonsoir.

Here some more info.
