It is a bathythermagraph.
They are inert
It records temperature vs depth on a smoked glass slide.
it is used to get a sound velocity profile at sea which is used to compute sound ray paths in sonar systems.
They were used in anti Submarine Warfare and Oceanography.
It probably dates from 1940 to 1960 or so.
They have been replaced in service by an expendable version.
I will try to dig examples of each out and post some pictures.

This pic is of a Sippican 'expendable bathythermagraph',used in the 70's.
My father managed to get hold of one from a friend on a research vessel as he wanted the 100s of feet of copperwire!
I was given the 'bomb', might have been the start of my collecting.
