Yesterday we found a practice 3inch mortar, nothing unusual apart from the fact that instead of a fuze it was plugged with the base plug from a mills grenade.Normally we find these with plug rep no162 fuze.I didnt have my camera at the time so sorry ive had to do a drawing. The photo is of the actual mills plug from this round,
Has anyone seen this before ,could it be bored troops or a bit of recycling ???

Unlikely !

I think your guess at a bit of "bored troops" will be the answer as both items have distinctly different threads and the "Mills" plug being made from a "Maizac" type material could be easily persuaded to fit into the bomb body.
Well a different find for sure !
