US Mortars?

Hi, I new to the BOCN, and I just inherited 2 mortars from my grandfather, And I don't have a clue of their model and nationality. The bigger one still have the fuze, it's look like alluminiun and can open it, and the smaller one don't.

Now, since I don't know anything about mortars: The smaller one have some green and yellow ink on it, but I can't open it. Could it still be charged and be dangerous?

Welcome to BOCN. The bigger one look like a Japanese, 81mm type 97. Not sure of the fuse though... still looking.
Is there any marking "ingraved/stamped" at all on the smaller one??

Unknown mortars

Hello,
on first view, the mortar with fuze is a french or italian 81 mm mortar with fuze V18IR or italian similar.

Can you give some dimensions.

the smaller of the two looks like an american M69 mortar for training with the M2 and M19 mortar systems.

The big one, with the fuze, is 29cm height, is about 8cm wide (max diameter). The fuze head is about 5 cm, with a plastic cap.

The smaller one, has the letters M and A1 visibles... and a low bevel mark with "XX 01 66". The XX is an unidentificated number or letters, look like a B3 or R3. His dimensions are: About 19-20cm high, and 6 wide (diameter).

I would say the big one is French, I am about 99% sure

Thanks. Yes, the big one look very similar to the Japanese model, but, judging by the fuse, it's French. I've been looking for some pictures.

The smaller one, 19cm high and 6cm wide, dont have the original fuse, my major concern is that it's still charged, because I cannot open it. It has two whipped/creased marks on the shell wheel, one in each half of the wheel. It weighs 350 grams, so judging by the weight, I believe it's not charged.

sorry, forgot to say ealier that the M69 is a 60mm mortar (ties in with the 6cm....) . and it is 7.72 inches (again....which is 19cm).

The round consists of a reusable inert projectile, a fin assembly and an ignition cartridge.

Other than the baffles on the side it looks identical.

Looking at a picture of the US 60mm it would appear to be very similar with maybe a fin missing from the tail. Can anyone who has one tell me, is the fuze well normally filled with an insert/adaptor ? that would stop you from seeing right to the base inside the body.
The only way to be sure if it is inert or not if unsure at all would be to contact your local police or bomb disposal service.

Yeah... about that. I'm from Brazil, and here you cannot have any military stuff... I mean, in the best scenario, they would take the mortar from me, and the worst, I could be arrested for illegal possession.

A year ago, the federal police took the whole collection of a history teacher near my neiboor. He had a WWII collection of guns, mortars, helmets, gas-masks, etc... I mean, nothing was working... some old lady must have told the police about it, and they made a fiasco... They broked into his house with guns and everything... a mess. I guess they're trying to show some work...


Oh and yes, there is a missing fin in the tail, don't know why. The only thing that's different from the M69 is the baffles on the side of it.

Your second one like to be an american projectile M49 but there is a little thing too much : the fuze adaptor ! Not previous on a HE american projo !

I Like the illustrations that you posted of the US M49A1 Mortar. Do you have this file (that you sourced these illustrations from) in a format that you can upload for other BOCN members to download. I would very much appreciate a copy as even though my primary interest is in Japanese I also have a interest in WWII US and Australian Ordnance as well.
