Vendée, France, 1793 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18349514/. François Athanase de Charette de la Contrie was leading a peasant revolt against the newly formed Republic of France, which needed a lot of soldiers (remember, Napoleon Bonaparte even sent French Army to Haiti). In a very simple form, Vendeans wanted to keep their sons from being conscripted, to have a King and to practice Catholisism. At the end, the peasant army of Vandee was crushed. A quarter of a million people perished, which is a lot for a relatively small department.
