The village has a quirky village hall unlike any other I have seen. In the entrance hall are a series of plaques and memorials. I will show a few here but I know I have other photos that I will load when I can find them. I suspect the MTB 70 plaque is like many others that were presented up and down the country. Spalding raised money for a submarine but I think it was sunk about 18 months after it was taken into service. With regard to the Lockheed C141A Starlifter 67-0006 crash on 28th August 1976 I was staggered to find out just a few days ago that one of its sister aircraft - 67-0008 - crashed in Greenland on the same day with an even greater loss of life. On a side note, while researching the crash of a Canberra on Huntingdon, which I thought was in 1976 (how I found out more about the two Starlifter crashes) I found there were 46 crashes of British military aircraft - planes and helicopters - in 1976. The Canberra crash that I remembered was actually in 1977. At that time I and my family lived in St Ives which is six miles from Huntingdon. The Starlifter crashed at Thorney Dyke, about two miles from the village, where a memorial stone and plaque are to be found.
The plaque for MTB 70 reads: "Presented by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to Thorney RD (Registration District) (Cambs) to commemorate the adoption of HMMTB 70 during warship week Feb 28th 1942."
The plaque on the cased US flag reads: "Dedicated to the citizens of Thorney for honoring and protecting the memories of the crew and passengers of 67-0006."
I have now found the other photos and will add them here.
