What do you make of this Mills Bomb?

Is this a practice piece. It appears complete, doesn't have any holes drilled in it, etc.

Its the right colour for a drill grenade but it should have some holes drilled in the body. very strange.
can you let us know what markings are on the body, baseplug and lever please? if any.

Hi Reg,

the holes were not drilled in drill bodies prior to the mid 1930s, maybe this is one of these that has escaped treatment?

i would say its a WW2 HE converted to a practice just because theirs sealer round the center tube thread and they have just not bothered to drill it out.

When I was an army cadet, in about 92, they had a box of 36s, two were sectioned and the rest were just painted white with no holes drilled.

In the 1937 Small Arms Training booklet for the grenade (vol 1 Pamphlet 13) it describes a 36 grenade as " Varnished on the outside as a protection against rust and is black in colour, a red band is painted around the top of the body, and over the filler screw to denote the grenade is filled, The dummy No 36 grenade is grey in colour or it may be painted white, there is no coloured band".

No mention of drilled holes here at all.

Did notice the baseplug in the photo is 1940 dated, but my father remembers that during grenade practice, after recocking the grenade any baseplug and handle to hand was used, so they I presume they all got mixed up.
