'Window' projectile

Hi,

Reading 'OP 1664 US Explosive ordnance' from 1947.
Pages 42-45 are about 'window' projectiles. 5 inches diameter, with three possible 'Window Load' Mk1, Mk2, Mk4.

Could someone explain what is the purpose of this kind of projectiles ?

Thanks,

S.

Windows, Chaff a form of Radar countermeasures. The shells eject a large quantity of aluminium tinsel (very Radar reflective) that obscures the vessel's own radar reflection.
