I've recently got a german WW1 stick grenade in a poor condition. It's head is badly corroded and provides an insight. There's a wooden charge inside - but why?
No trouble at all as we are all here to help one another, regardless of post count!

Hello, Very likely this is the case (Practice Stick Hgr.; Picture 1). Not exactly the same cover of the body (there were few modifications, in dependence of the manufacturer), but the principle is almost the same. Is there groove(s) for balls? In some cases (connected with the lack of explosives), only half explosive charge was used, with wooden cylinder above (Picture 2).
HELLO,
Following the adoption of TNT boxes existing before amendment, were equipped with a wooden wedge (42.5 g) to make up the difference density of the two explosives. This allowed to use the old boxes with new explosive but also to keep the same weight so as not to disrupt the pitcher. In France, on the front of Champagne, this type of grenade is regularly found. Here are some photos showing ..
Hello again,
To give the shooter the illusion of owning a real grenade, inside of the box is inserted a block of wood weighted by lead pellets. The grenade presented as real could detect individuals likely to behave in a dangerous contact, it was provided during the last level of instruction before using grenades loaded.
