it could be a "Auflegeklotz". It's part of artillery shell packages. The ogive of the shell stuck inside this wooden piece. During 2nd WW these parts were made as a sheet metal construction.

Attached picture shows such a wooden block. It's not the same but similar. Many types of tem existed...

Indeed it is.
I will put in the collection:tinysmile_fatgrin_t

Hi Alpini, just a quick question: these "Auflegeklötze(n)" not sure how it would be plural, these were used in conjuction with the round shell carrying wicker baskets, but were they also used in some wooden boxes. Thanks.

Auflegeklötze is the correct plural. I think they were used only in the baskets. Wooden boxes for larger germam artillery shells in WW1? I am not sure if I have seen one?

Thank you Alpini, that answers my question. I have seen these Auflegeklötze, usually made of zinc and wood and the biggest ones were for 10,5cm shells, may be there are bigger ones? I also have a couple of examples made entirely of metal sheet for the 7,7cm 3-round basket.
