I went out to look through all the examples of shrapnel projos I have, from 6 inch down to 3 inch. For some strange reason their previous owners wire-brushed all the original paint off of them, even the unfired ones.
I did have one example with original paint. An experimental 105 Howitzer projectile from 1923, so when looking at the photos remember its 101 years old. You can see the black lettering in a couple of the shots. Black lettering on a flat red body is the color code.
