WW1 French 105mm HE paint...

starshell

Hello all,

I'm tidying up a First war French 105mm shell, ready for painting, and have 2 questions I need help with:

1. Were the shells ever painted below the driving band?

2. I am painting this particular shell in 2 colours, as per the original. Assuming they were painted from the driving band upwards, did the first colour (which looks to be a Red-ish shade) stop at the Bourrelet or slightly above?
(I have a French 155 HE with remains of original paint, both colours separated at the bourrelet line, but I also have a French 90mm, again 2 colours, but separated about 1" above the Bourrelet line). Was there any particular standard insofar as painting went? (Sorry. Thats 3 questions....)

Any help before I commit would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance!
