WW1 German Friction Fuses

I am beginning to acquire a number of Kugel grenades which, I understand, have 'friction fuses'. Could someone please explain how these work? I assume 'friction' means heat generated by one surface rubbing against another such as a match, but after pulling the wire loop how is the essential 'delay' achieved before the grenade explodes, hopefully, away from the thrower?

By addition of a little piece of safety fuze between the friction fuze and the explosive !
