WW1 German training grenades?

Infanteer

Well-Known Member
I recently received several grenades including these two which have been painted red. There appears to be a dark shellac under the red paint which I assume is the original finish. Both grenades have identical paint and wear, which seems unlikely if the paint is original. What does everyone think, are these original training grenades or have they been refinished at some point?

hello
old original paint is oil-based, and is therefore very difficult to dissolve, e.g. with thinner
recent paint transfers paint onto your canvas with just one swipe
this is how I test my goods

Of course, that makes sense. I‘ll test the paint and see what I get. Thanks!

Well, I ended up wiping the paint with acetone as that’s what I had on hand, and surprisingly, the paint held fast. The flannel patches came away dirty, but not coloured with the red paint. So it appears that the red finish has some age, but I still find it odd that two different examples would have such similar finishes.
