WW2 German SD 0.5 bomblet grenade

This just came in the post from Snufkin (thanks Tom). I have made no secret that I really have an affinity for the "expedient" grenades. This is a late WW2 German expedient grenade made from an SD 0.5 bomblet and a fuze. I just fell in love with this piece. Incidently this one also took 11 weeks to arrive from England. Dano

sd 0.5 expedient grenade

Hi engineer, I'm trying to figure the context of nuts. If you're wondering if it is a legit grenade, then yes it is pretty well documented. On Lexpev's site there is a write-up. JC militaria has a waffen. stamped one for sale on their site, and there a few members of BOCN with examples. Modified from a bomblet SD 0.5 it was a late WW2 German expedient grenade. If you meant in another context then I guess I just struck out..Regards....Dano

Hi dano,

nuts means nonsens. Yes, I know this "grenades" and have 2 of this goodies in my own collection. But I don't believe them to be authentic.

Cheers

Hi engineer, Just to satisfy my own curiousity what leads you to think that these are not authentic. No problem at all, just looking to get your opinion. Respectfully...Dano

Hi dano,

a grenade igniter which accidently fits in a o,5kg bomblet is no argument for an expedient grenade. I've never seen this goodies in a relic dug-out condition. Mostly they are offered as grenades especially made for paratroopers - a guaranty to achieve a stiff price.

Cheers

i'm with you Danno, they do exsist.

Lets be honest weve seen lots of diffrent fuzes on many a diffrent explosive device.
I bet there are some that were one offs put together as a IED that we'll never see as they were made as one offs in the field.

I do think the ''nuts'' coment abit strong though,we all keep friendly and diplomatic on here so lets keep it that way.

peace maaan

Hmmm,

Ive never known engineer to be wrong before on this sort of ordnance...He is a well respected member/knowledgeable collector(and good friend of mine) who 'tells it as it is'....
An earlier post mentions that a 'waffenamt' stamp has been seen on a bomblet for sale..,trust me when is say ive seen them faked time and time again as there were dealers selling DIY waff-stamping kits openly at Beltring:tinysmile_cry_t2:
As far the item in question,
I do have one of these in my collection and have always led to believe that they were indeed some sort of bomblet?(although ive always had my doubts).
Only ever seen one picture of one in relic condition but the 'bomblet' could have been aged?

Jo,have you any period wartime pics of these bomblets please? I have to admit that ive never see one?
It would settle this debate once and for all! ;)

best,
your pal

There seem to be a whole lot of people that think this to be a legit grenade including me, but this hobby might get a bit boring if everyone had the same opinion. Dano

I have one also.
I've seen one being offered with an ANZ 29 fuze. I'm also led to believe that this an instant firing fuze. Don't think THAT was right.
Which fuze is on Dano's? Seems more practical.
I've also seen them offered with an a/p mine fuze. Any thoughts on that?

Anyways, nice find Dano!

Strange grenade

Hi everybody,
In 2001 I was n Kosovo. I may affirm that wars and necessity create a great lot of improvised ammunitions. Look on the picture hereby and you shall be surprised. Yes, I found this in Kosovo. Gren was filled with black powder and fuze was taped on the grenade. Completely improvised but efficient.

Merry christmas and happy newyear to all.

The 0.5 Kg grenades were also locally produced using a weak concrete mix and were found in Guernsey

Dano,Im cool with debates about any item.
What i wasnt so keen on was an earlier post aimed at engineer's 'Nuts' comment and telling him to 'keep it friendly'.

carry on!

@dano1917: Please excuse my French. I didn't know that "nuts" could be an abusive term. I didn't want to insult you in any way, dano. I just wanted to express my opinion that this kind of "shaving stick grenades" is not authentic. However I'm ready to be taught otherwise...

@waffenamt: thanks Paul for you additional and clarifying comment. Unfortunately I do not have any pics or drawings of this 0,5 kg bomblet, excepted the scan in "German Explosive Ordnance", posted by spotter.

Cheers

Hey, No offense taken from anyone. Also no offense was meant to anyone. I like a little controversy and here we are. And Waff I meant no offense on the nuts comment, I just did not understand the meaning and was looking to clarify what was meant. I think it has made for a pretty good thread. Merry Christmas to all and happy new year.....Dano
