WW2 German stick grenade case?

I saw this case in an antique shop recently. It looks similar to a stick grenade case, but I'm not sure what the compartment partitions are for. Can anyone tell me what it's for?

I have seen similar cased used to carry 37mm ammunition but never a layout like that. I wonder if it is a post-war conversion, the welding looks a bit crude.
