WW2 Italian airdropped bombs in the UK

Well-Known Member
A lot of people don't realise that during WW2, Italian fighter and bomber squadrons flew missions from bases in German occupied Belgium to attack the mainland UK. This was admittedly on a far, far smaller scale than Luftwaffe operations.

Does anyone know of unexploded Italian bombs being found during or at any time after WW2?

Also, did any Italian aircraft get shot down or crash in the UK? If so, have any crash sites been excavated?

Thanks for any info.

There's a FIAT CR fighter that was shot down in Kent on display at the RAF Museum , Hendon.

The Hendon CR42 force-landed at Orfordness in Suffolk on 11th November 1940, a second CR42 fighter forced-landed North of Lowestoft and a BR 20 bomber crashed at Tangham forest, Bromeswell. All aircraft were recovered by the RAF.

As far as i'm aware the only civilians killed in the UK by the Reggia Aeronautica were three workers in the Lowestoft co-op canning factory killed by a 100 kg bomb dropped by a night flying BR20 on the 29th November 1940.

also germans used italian and french 50kg GP bombs on their air raids dropping them packed in abvurfbehalter AB 500-3 dispensers. italian bombs were in luftwaffe designated as SD50 (it) and french as SD50(frz). can't say anything about usage of those in britain, but in bosnia and herzegovina those bombs were used that way.
