WW2 Japanese Type 91 Grenade

Very nicve cutaway model and a very nice display and picture. Thanks for posting.
If I am not wrong it could also be launched with a mortar?
Regards, DJH

The Type 91 was a versatile grenade. It could be used as a hand grenade, or have a finned tail assemble screwed into the base and launched from a spigot, or fitted with a booster and launched from a Knee Mortar. To be suitable for all of these different methods of use it had to have a seven second delay fuze. Unfortunately this proved to long for a hand grenade, as the enemy had time to throw it back. Therefore, the type 97 was introduced, which had a 4.5 second delay. You will notice that the delay cavity in the schematic (4.5 sec) is shorter than the cutaway one (7 sec). I also have a brass booster cover which to date has not been positively identified. One theory is that was trialed as a means of turning the grenade into a type of jumping mine. I you have any information on the booster cover, please share. Thanks

Colin,

You mentioned a brass booster cover needing identification. By chance, did it come from an ordnance source in China who used to sell on eBay? If so, I recall seeing that piece on eBay or Gunbroker. I'm pretty sure it's the propellant container for the 10th year flare and smoke rounds fired from Type 10 discharger. Look familiar?

This one is a daytime black smoke round. The body is made from a cardboard tube so the survival rate is a bit low on these.

Nice item, I have never seen one of these before, cardboard looks in very good condition. Tony.

Great info and photos

Hi, Thanks for the great information and photo's. The cap looks very similar, it's good to have it identified. Cheers
