WWII US Mk. 2 Grenades

Here are two US "Pineapples". the one on the left has the smaller plug hole in the bottom. I was told that it is the earlier model from around 1935. the grenade on the right was dug on Okinawa. It is later and has a larger bottom plug. When did they make the larger holed bottom? VaughnIMG_0399.jpgIMG_0400.jpg

Are you sure the holes are different sizes? I can see that the size of the bases is different which might create the illusion that the holes are different sizes. Please let me know if I am mistaken.

Hello Infanteer;
Yes, the smaller hole or plug measures 12.9 mm., and the larger one is 14.5 mm.. Vaughn

Interesting that the hole size would vary by such a small amount. Manufacturer's variance? Seems like too small of a difference to be an official change but that's just my personal opinion as I don't have enough experience with these to give an educated / factual response. I hope someone with more knowledge responds. Your lucky to have such an interesting artifact from Okinawa.

You might be able to chalk the difference up to deterioration. The lip of the hole on the grenade to the right appears to be eroded. Can you measure the width of the plug instead?
