Zone Troopers (1985)

This is a classic B movie about a squad of American GI's who encounter aliens in a crashed UFO in Italy during IIWW https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092298/, I am not recommending this movie (even though several steins of Schnapps will make it very watchable). But I have a question. The soldiers in this movie have very realistic equipment (except for tanks). But this gun resembling a Thompson SMG does not look familiar. Did it really exist?

I love that Movie! I don't know why, but I watch it whenever I see it on.

The gun looks like an M1A1 Thompson from the chamber back, and movie hype forward of that.
