For the past twelve months I have tried to start a Drill Round Collection here in South Africa. Here are the Wooden Drill Rounds I have managed to accumulate. It would be great if you could show me photos of items in your collections. Always good to have a wish list.

This is my collection:

From left to right.

a. 3 inch 50 Cal (USA) 1944
b. 4 inch Mk.4 1942
c. 4 inch Mk.16 1943
d. 25 pounder 1943
e. 4 inch Mk.16 1943
f. 17 pounder Mk.2 1944
g. 3.7 inch Mk.1 Anti-Aircraft 1943

Andy,

Nice collection!

Any chance of getting of getting a picture of the bases and a listing of any base marks.

I've got several of the U.S. 3 inch 50 Cal., all WW2. A friend has a U.S. 4 inch L50 wood practice round which I will try and get a photo of and post here.

I'm taking the liberty of listing some other items that are not mine but fit in here and make a good addition to the subject matter.

Here's a pretty rare and interesting example of a wood-body dummy; 7.7x58 Japanese -

A couple of 3" 50s

And a 6" 47. It was too big of a chore to dig out from behind things.

When I was about 10 years old, I ordered this wooden drill round from a classified ad in, Shot Gun News. It was the very first inert ord item I ever had. I was told that it is a WW2 US Navy 5" Submarine Deck Gun drill round. When I bought it, the projectile (looks to be the real thing) was separated from the wooden case. After I dropped the projectile into the case a spring loaded pin locked into the projectile securing it to the case.

Jason,

I've never seen a 5" drill round before (add another new one to the list of not seen before), thanks very much for posting. By the way your article in Jan/Feb 2015 IAA Journal on 120mm APFSDS-T tank ammunition was fantastic, job well done!

Following the gist of the thread, I ran across this rig aboard the USS Kidd:
A loading trainer for the 5" mount.

Sadly, none of the specimens ended up in the collection. Will post pics of the other goodies in other threads.

Slick,

For the first 3 inch 50Cal. in your post, is it dated on the base and what is the Mark designation? I assume this one predates the second 3 inch 50 Cal. you show. I messed up years ago and did not buy one of the types in your first photo when they were common in surplus stores:tinysmile_cry_t:

Thanks,

Brian

Thank you big time, Brian!
I just got my copy today and its awesome to get your feedback! Thank you!

Those are great pics, Rick!
I always wondered what the loading set-up looked like for those drill rounds.

Brian

The camera could not pick up the very light stampings. There appears to an "MK", but no visible number.
There is also the top half of a stamping that is either a "25" or "35", below the MK stamp.
The only other stampings include 3" DUMMY(very faint), SHC and 50CAL
