Machine guns drove the use of canister rounds out of favor, but they reappeared in WW2 for use in 37mm size in US tanks. Then the "bee hive" flechette rounds used in Viet Nam could be considered a type of canister. Some ides keep coming back when a need for them appears.
The U.S. has canister rounds for the 105mm and 120mm Tank guns that were developed for use in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are filled with Tungsten Carbide balls.
