sorry for resurrecting old thread, just a bit information on specimen. Those piercing caps formally were called two-component pad. It acted like protective cap (reducing stress to the core) but also made projectile less prone to ricocheting, driving the core into the armour. In result new rounds could penetrate almost the same LOS thickness of vertical and heavily angled (up to 60 degrees NATO) targets. APDS of this kind, called "type H", were developed since 1953 (by Permutter and co.), and introduced firtly with 120 mm L11.
