Does the "U" indicate that this case was manufactured in South Africa ?

I assume the H E is for High Explosive, then what does the S L Stand for?

Andy,

I think it must be, however, there is normally a broadarrow within the 'U'. I have seen a WWII 25 PR case (Canadian manufactured) with the aforementioned mark on it, so it was still being used in that period. I have no information on the manufacture of artillery cartridge cases by South Africa during WWII, do you have any?

SL - one would assume to be 'Streamlined'
