15 pr Shrapnel shell variant?

The pictures are of the nose piece of a 15pr Mk IV shrapnel projectile from the turn of the 20th century. Above the sheer pins is a line of 'dots' which are the ends of relatively fine wire that can be seen from the underside of the piece. I assume that these held a wooden block in place as I can't think of any other purpose for them. I have seen many of these projectiles over the years but never one where the wire is visible on the exterior. Has anyone else seen this model or have any information regarding the purpose of the wire?
