Well, some info is, that it is in a US Antitank/Antiaircraft Gun case, not a 17 Pdr case (same projo diameter). Maybe a war experiment to increase the performance of the US Guns.

Take the connection of case and projo with a grain of salt. These are museum pieces were put together by people who don't necessarily know the difference. Aberdeen is full of mistakes when looking at those types of connections. They repainted, refuzed, recased, and miss ID'd many of their holdings.

Can you see how the projectile is attached to the case? The original projectile/case fitting was unusual in that the projectile was screwed and glued to the case, the case having a male thread.

The US M41 Walker Bulldog tank had such a round for its 76mm gun. That gun used converted 3 inch Mark II M2 cases (shown as T19 originally but final designation M88). There is an image in manual TM 9-1300-203 dated 1967 showing this round, but I have never seen an actual example until now.
