18-pounder markings

Hi

The attached sketch of an 18-pr and primer raises a few questions.

On the casing base, I know everything except the BSC S - manufacturer's marks? Does anyone have a list of manufacturers?

On the primer, what is the EWB Co, W and N007?

thanks

Doug

Hi Doug,

EWB could have been E.W. Bliss out of Brooklyn, NY. They made the the Whitehead Torpedo in the 1890's and the Bliss-Leavitt Torpedo in the early 1900's. It's a shot in the dark.

18 Pd.

BSC is the Bethlehem Steel Company and EWB is indeed E.W. BLiss, who were owned by then by BSC. I think the "S" indicates which BSC plant the case was made at. Normally "S" on its own, not in a square, means the case has been scleroscoped for stuctural integrity.

Tony,

The 'S' in a square is the mark of the Scoville Manufacturing Co. USA. Coupled with BSC indicates that it they were sub-contractors to Bethlehem Steel Co.
