1862 metal issued box ~

Has anyone ever seen anything like this ? It was alluded to that it was
Artillery related, but I don't think the seller had any real idea. The white internal
colour might not be original. It's very heavily built and has a typical hasp
lock set up on the front which I didn't take an image of. One broad arrow stamp.
Any thoughts are welcome.

No idea what the box was made for but Laycock Engineering Ltd was a firm founded in the late 19th Century manufacturing precision items for steam ships and steam engines. Several amalgamations later they are part of GKN

does it have handles on the ends?it would be very difficult to carry it by the one handle in the middle,if it contained anything heavy

I suspect that it might be a tool box.

Well the purpose remains unknown but it's not military. It is a Government purchase as shown by the
arrow stamp. So it's just one of those things that will remain a mystery.
