In the middle of the writing it appears to say: "We are now starting on a new Navy ship and that will mean a lot of work". Did Martin Co. make Navy ships or am I mis-reading the word "ship"?

Most probably what is intended by "ship" is "flying ship" - often also designated in BlennMartin documents as "patrol boats" - The company had in fact relocated in 1929 from Cleveland to Baltimore to be near tidewater as "patrol boats" were being built. The Cleveland branch was re-opened in 1940 to face the rise in demand due to ww2.
The PBM Mariner (PB = patrol boat M = [Glenn] Martin) was a flying boat built by Glenn martin for the US Navy that made its first flight in 1939 and served all along ww2 in the USN and the RAAF. They will also serve after the war with the USN in Korea and with the Dutch KNIL in Indonesia.
