1942 Artillery Shell - Help please

Hi,

This is my first post. I have a large brass artillery shell that I'd like to know more about. It measures 90mm across the bottom, 55mm across the top and 425mm from top to bottom (although there is a chance it might have been cut down as the top and bottom are both milled so I think it was turned into a lamp or something similar at some time.)

It has a number of markings on the bottom as follows:

6 PR, 7 CWT
1
Lot 133(W/8)
RM/C
1942

Any help would be appreciated.

Its a case for the O.Q.F. 6 pdr 7 cwt anti tank gun. Case should be 441mm long. Hope this helps.

Hi CMJW, Welcome to BOCN. What you have is indeed cut down. It started life as a 6 pounder 7 hundredweight anti tank cartridge. It was the standard mid war Allied Anti tank weapon, replacing the 2 pounder before itself being replaced with the 17 pounder. Cheers Hangarman

RM/C - Robert Mitchell & Co., St. Laurent, Quebec, Canada. Which was one of Canada's biggest producers of brass cases during WW2.
