1944 backpack

hi, i have a original good condition steel framed back pack,with rubber coating inside.
a couple of the straps are dry and i fear will crack,does anyone know what i can use to soften up and preserve the very old leather?

Its green canvass with metal,buckles,beige straps with 'T.S LTD 1944' inside the cover.
I was told a 'desert rat 'gave it to my Dad some years ago,and had used it in the desert whilst fighting Romell!!!

For leather use neatsfoot oil.
