203mm (8”) M106 HE projectile with M201A1 powder charge for M110A2 howitzer

Cutaway model of a 203mm (8”) M106 HE projectile as used in the M115 towed howitzer, the M43 motor carriage and the M110 and the M110A1/A2 self propelled howitzer. The projectile uses fragmentation, blast and mining to destroy a target. Targets are to be considered anything within range. When using the towed M115 or M110 SPG, the maximum range of the projectile is 16.926 mtrs. (11miles). Vo. is 594 mtrs/sec when using the 13,56 kg (29 lb 14oz) M2 ‘white bag’ –maximum range- powder charge.
There are two long barrelled versions of the howitzer, the M110A1which has no muzzle brake, and the M110A2 howitzer with a double baffle muzzle brake, which allows for a more powerfull propelling charge. Maximum range for the M1A1 is 22.900 mtrs. (14,22 miles), maximum range for the M110A2 is 25.000 mtrs (15,53 miles).
The M201A1 text on the powderbag means that it is meant for the M110A2 (double baffle muzzle brake version) only.
Weight of the projectile is 200 Lb (90,7 kg).
The explosive charge is 36 pounds cast TNT.
Length of the fuzed projectile is 890mm.

The projectile consists of a hollow steel forging with a boat tailed base, and an ogive towards the top. A wide red copper driving band is placed on the just above the boat tailed base. At the base, a 1,5 mm thick disc is welded that forms an extra seal. When the projectile is forged small cracks can appear in the base, so the disc prevents hot gas from reaching the explosive charge and cause a premature explosion.

The projectile has a deep fuze cavity that is normally filled with a 0,30Lb TNT supplementary charge packed in an aluminium container. When using a fuze with a long tail piece, the supplementary charge is removed. Depending on the fuze used, the projectile explodes on impact (M-557 series impact fuze), after digging in upon impact (M-557 with delay setting), or in airburst mode when using the VT M514 series (proximity) fuze.
