26.5mm flare?

Can anyone shed some light on the pictured "flare"? The head with the nub is magnetic, the body it is attached to is not. And what's with the notched rim? Tactile ID or something else? Maybe it's missing a windscreen or something that would slip over the nub. Thanks in advance for ID.

Sorry no documentation on it but it is czech cartridge used to shoot open doors etc.

Fired one ones in Czech Republic, my shoulder is not normal since then.

Yea, I've fired a few flares. The regular ones are, impressive. Would hate to think what this one would feel like.

As for details of use, are these placed up against the lock and fired or does it use a stand-off device? Is it used in a regular flare gun or is there a special door breaching gun? A neat addition to my flare collection. Never knew they existed in this "format".

Here is a picture of the rifle and I think it looks a lot like it. On the table you see to more rounds.
The big guy is not me firing. I'm slimmer and not so pale in the face.

Yea, I agree. It looks to be CS what with the markings and all. Now I just need to find examples of the other rounds. Along with the launcher, of course. :)

It is not for shooting doors open but to shoot trough them and fill the room behind with tear gas or setting off a flash bang. There was a lengthy articel in the Czech or Slovak ammo research bulletin. These cartridges will not chamber in regular caliber 4 weapons.
 
Ahhhh. Finally got one. Ever since I found out about the RV 85, the urge to have one grew. Today was the day. NIB. A simple, captive push pin and it's assembled and ready for use. Single shot, break-open. Tool and cleaning kits and some spare parts. The manuals might be interesting. The test target made me laugh. I guess I'll have to go rabbit (or bird!) hunting with this thing. A fine addition to the flare gun assemblage. Now, I just need to find an example or two of the LE/Mil. type rounds.

Rick, this is no flare gun and it is also not meant to fire flares at all (notice the rim of the cartridges for it). This is a Police weapon for SWAT teams.

Understood. I did not bother to post the pictures I took of the variations between the flare cartridge and the "door-buster" round. The main difference being the head of the case. My guess is the firing pin might not even strike the primer of a standard flare as the crimping of the rim on the door-buster is designed to hold it out from the chamber and against the face of the breech.
Note my mention of needing to acquire LE/Mil. type cartridges. I just wanted to show off the newest item in the collection.

Nice buy Rick. Am I right that flare guns are not even classed as firearms in the USA so you could get the RV-85 mailed straight to your door?

Is it rifled or smooth bored? If it is smooth bored then I could even own one easily here in the UK (if I could find someone willling to import one) as it is legally a shotgun here.

You are correct. No restrictions on flare guns(and contrary to EOD's warning, this is classified as a flare gun). No paperwork required. It is a smooth bore. Approx. 4 ga. if one was considering it in the shotgun category. I would imagine the importing problems/issues would negate the fun of getting one in the UK. I got what I consider a very good deal on this one, so I'm very happy. Here are a couple more pics.

If one was imported to the UK, I would think it would have to be proofed here. Flare pistols are "section 1" firearms here, meaning that they are in the same category as bolt-action rifles. However the RV-85 has a barrel over 12in so it isn't classed as a pistol.

Legally it fits the UK definition of a shotgun, which is something like: "smooth bore weapon with a barrel over 24in long, and with a bore of less than 2 inches". There is no definition that a shotgun should be any particular calibre. For example if the rifling was removed from a .308 single shot rifle, it would be legally classified as a shotgun.

Agreed. My point being, the folks that make these classification decisions have, apparently, little experience with firearms of any sort. The criteria is based more on political considerations than facts/details. In this instance, it worked for me and those interested in these types of things. The old Ferret(sp?) riot guns and similar launchers are grouped in the flare gun category, as well. Here's hoping they leave that section alone.
