hi, picked these up recently. Original paint and N stencil but no bands or filling station details so presumably taken from the manufacturers before they reached the filling station. All I need now is 2 243 fuzes! One has a base transit plug, the other a base firing plug. The 37mm M51 came with them.

Hi I may be able to help you with the 40 mm shell
! Yes as you say they are empty ready painted for filling

2 The filling factory would mark them with the markings eg HE band (RDX/TNT) Station & Date

3 They would be fitted with N259 fuze and a N14 tracer igniter

$ Then assemble the shell to the case

Hope this info helps

thanks Steve, although the fuze would have been a 243 or 246 as these shells are both dated 1942. The 259, which is essentially a 246 with the profile of a 251 was not introduced until 1944 and as far as I am aware was not ever fitted to 2pdr (40mm)HV rounds.
