Hi, its what it says on the shell as regards type and mark, but im confused by the NX code? I had a similar projectile fired, which came from an army range. The shell had an SX code which denotes land service use, and would have been fired from a Daimler armoured car at that date. Certainly not a common item. Perhaps Tim G might know?
It's a shot.. 2pdr were used up until quite recently for research purposes. Most of the UK ballistic tables were based on the 2pdr which was occasionally dug out for test and calibration purposes. This one was made by Birtley long after the 2pdr was out of service.
The 2 pdr was a useful ballistic test round as it was quite fast, but did not need as big a range and was cheaper than larger founds. You could turn up test projectile profiles on a toolroom lathe and re-load the cases using fairly simple tools.
