3 Inch ammo case??

Hello, can anyone tell me anything about this ammo case, I know nothing about these things so any information would be gratefully received! Thanks.
 
The normal length for that MkIIM2 case is 586mm.
Blanks are usually 168mm. So this is probably cut-down (?) though it could be for a Blank or Clearing Charge...
 
It is a U.S. 3 inch antiaircraft gun/antitank gun case from WWII, evidently cut with about a 1/3 remaining.
