Hi to all,
just come across a 30-40 krag round with the headstamp RA 17(Remington Arms 1917),any ideas if this would be military with this late? date and what it would be used for during this period if so?(apart from trying to shoot people!).
Unable to post photo,as still waiting for it to turn up.
Cheers
Tony

.30-40 Krag

There were still reserve (National Guard) units armed with the Krag in WWI, and just as we continued making Mark VI ammo right to the end of the war, the US also made Krag rounds.

The Krag round was also used in a sub-calibre artillery device and in that role the Krag round was made right through until after WW2. That version was the M1925, and had a pointed bullet.

Whilst on the subject of the Krag, keep an eye open for one headstamped "K C 98", or "(or "99"), as these were made by Kynoch on an American contract for use in the Spanish-American War. By the time Kynoch had made them the war was over, but when the Americans tried to cancel the contract Kynoch took them to court.

Many thanks TonyE,thought I may have dropped a bo-bo with this one! Also waiting for a 7.92 Besa Inspectors round & a HII grenade blank coming with it,Tony would you have a photo of the top/inside of the grenade blank to show how they were "capped off" as the one coming has been inerted via the open neck and would like to repair/make look right again?

All the best
Tony

Just as a side note, the US issued Krag's in the depression to banks to help stop the robberies or the times, also again in WW2 for cerimonial use. There are lots of blanks, cal. .30 M3 available, these are .30-40 for salute firing.

Tony

here is a quick picture of the closure of an H.II discharger round.

As you can see, it is a wad covered with a thick layer of dark brown shellac with a shiny finish. I have a number of these in the collection and they are all sealed in the same way.

Hope this helps, but why inert a blank?
