30mm ADEN

Spaceinvader

Well-Known Member
Hello! I just got this round in the mail yesterday, and I was looking at it, and I noticed that instead on being one solid piece, it seems to have this pressed in metal bottom. I havent seen this before, and I am wondering what this is? Its a blue practice round I think, says INERT on the side. Looks like an iron driving band. Any help welcome! Thanks! -Rhys

It could be the same as an HE shell, sometimes they have a steel plate fixed to the base(frequency welded,or like this one crimped)to reduce the chance of premature detonation caused by small fissures in the bar stock the shell are turned/forged from.

could also be the M788 TP we use in the Apache Helio now,the flat base would suggest it's not a Aden TP

Ah. The fellow I bought it from said it was an ADEN round. It is certainly 30mm, and is about the same size as a 30mm DEFA, just slightly smaller. There is no markings except the word INERT stamped onto the fuze. If it helps, the driving band is iron. It could be an M788 but its not in the correct case. The case has some markings in the rim "569 CY 80 PRAC 4*Z". The small crimped in base plate is very thin also.

Ive done some looking around, and Im fairly certain this is an ADEN round. I found one online thats for sale is its the same kinda as mine, I think mine was just painted to be maybe a training round.

The case markings are Aden, however the projectile is not,the base of the Aden practice/TP projectile is bulbus not flat, the drive band on a Aden is copper not iron.
It could be a DEFA but I would have thought INERT would have been spelt INERTE,being French and all that,I still plump for it being a M788 projectile
All three of these rounds had the same case dimensions,30x113B, the Aden was brass,DEFA steel and M788 alloy.
I'm sure it is a case(pun intended) of a missmatched case and projectile.

Cheers

The US TP has no flat base unless there has been a design change. Also the US are not using much iron driving bands.

Materials of case and driving bands depends much on the maker on both ADEN and DEFA as both have been observed with all material combinations.
The M788 is still different - here the life M789 (TP is identical):

Interesting, I agree with Tony, its the wrong case for the projectile. Im guessing it might be some kind of DEFA or ADEN, the M877 has a rounded bottom it looks like.

Pic of the M788 TP HV LW as in British service....which has the flat base, but yes you are correct about the drive band, the manual does quote the drive band as being copper......I'm wondering if this could be a 'mauser' 27mm body with the wrong fuze fitted...is it me or does the blue paint look different shades on the body and fuze?

They are NOT identical!.....as can be seen from the photos, The M788 TP has a flat base and the M789 HEDP has a round base.

Could it be some kind of experimental Aden round? Also yes the paint is diffrent on the fuze. Im thinking this must be some kind of training round maybe? and the fuze was simply painted blue as-well.

There is probably 15+ countries who made plenty of different ADEN and DEFA rounds. Somebody with a good insight into this caliber from the international view could help clearing this up.
